Corbett National Park - To Encounter the Endangered

Corbett National Park is a heaven for wildlife lovers, who wish to relax in the tranquil lap of Mother Nature. Earlier, this park was known as the Ramganga National Park but renamed as the Corbett National Park in the year 1957.

This park derives its name from Jim Corbett, the famous British hunter, naturalist, and photographer. His famous book the ‘Man-Eaters of Kumaon’ mentions details of hunting experience in the Kumaon region of India. In the book, the author has lucidly described hunting a tiger that allegedly killed 400 humans.

This national park is located at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas and is known for its lush green surroundings. India is renowned worldwide for having the largest population of wild tigers, and the Corbett National Park is home to around 160 tigers. It is situated on the banks of the Ramganga River and is visited by tourists for its exotic sightseeing opportunities and adventure safaris.

Some of the animals that can be seen in the park are the tiger, leopard, elephant, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, barking deer, sloth bear, wild boar, ghural, langur, and rhesus monkey.

The colourful 600 bird species living in the park include the peacock, pheasant, pigeon, owl, hornbill, barbet, lark, myna, magpie, minivet, patridge, thrush, tit, nuthatch, wagtail, sunbird, bunting, oriole, kingfisher, drongo, dove, woodpecker, duck, teal, eagle, stork, cormorant, falcon, bulbul, and flycatcher.

Besides, travellers can see more than 51 different kinds of shrubs, 30 varieties of bamboos and over 110 different species of trees in the park.

Tourist places in and around Corbett National Park

Visitors planning to explore the wilderness of the Corbett National Park can also go to Dhikala, located at the edge of the Patli Dun Valley. Dhikala offers panoramic views of the valley, with the ridge of Kanda in its backdrop.

A drive through the numerous trails of Dhikala Chaur offers an opportunity to see wild elephants, chital, hog deer, and numerous bird species. Trekking with experienced guides is a popular activity enjoyed by tourists here.

The Kalagarh Dam is another popular site, located southwest of the national park. This place offers the best opportunity for bird watching. Migratory birds, namely waterfowl, can commonly be seen here during the winter season.

Tourists also visit the Corbett Waterfalls, which is nestled at a height about 60 ft. It is an ideal site for camping and picnic in the park. Elephant safari is available in Bijrani and Dhikala regions of the national park.

The Kosi River offers an opportunity for rafting to visitors coming to the Corbett National Park. The various resorts located in the park provide equipment and other requisite facilities for river rafting.

Jungle safaris, including jeep safaris in the wild trails of the national park, offer unlimited fun to visitors. Travellers can go for Mahseer Fishing in the catchment area of the River Kosi. There are many resorts that make necessary arrangements for fishing.

The Corbett Museum is a worth visiting tourist attraction, located in Kaladhungi. This is a heritage bungalow of the famous British Hunter Jim Corbett and contains some rare photographs as well as other belongings of this distinguished personality.

Tourists can stay in the Camp Kyari, which is situated on the Kumaon foothills. The Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary offers an opportunity to see Asiatic elephants and tigers in its wilderness.

The Ramganga River, Mandal River and Sonanadi River play an important role in the ecology of the national park. Tourist can also see ‘sots’, which refers to seasonal streams in local language.The Seetabani Temple and Ramnagar are other important attractions of the park.
