The best season to visit Chidambaram would be during the Tamil Nadu version of winter when the average temperature stays pretty much around the 20 degrees Celsius mark. And sparse rain, even if it happens, will not hinder the experience of being in Chidambaram. The winter season commences in Chidambaram from the month of November and lasts till February.
