Rakaskop, Belgaum

Rakaskop is a dam located at 16 km from Belgaum. Built across the Markandeya river, it is the lifeline of Belgaum.

Rakaskop literally means “a hamlet of rakkasa (giant)”, who is believed to have lived on a hillock near the village. A cavern in laterite on the hillock resembling a huge seated human figure is spotted here.
