Agumbe Tourism - The King Cobra Capital

Agumbe, a small village of the Tirthahalli taluk (home of the great poet Kuvempu) comes under the Malnad region. It is famously known for the beautiful sunsets over the Arabian Sea that can be witnessed from the region. Know for its scenic and serene landscape, it receives the highest rainfall in southern India.

Some Basics on Agumbe

Thanks to the rainforest and the varied flora and fauna, it is home to the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station in India. Agumbe also has a protected area for the conservation of medicinal plants and tourists from different places flock to Agumbe for its tranquility. The region also comprises of many beautiful water falls.

Spread out over 3 sq. km, Agumbe has a population of less than 500 people who mainly depend on the areca plantations and forest produce for living. It also offers very good trekking options for nature lovers and apart from the forest creatures that roam through the foliage; it is home to the longest venomous snake, the iconic King Cobra.

Agumbe is accessible by road and rail (the nearest rail junction is Udupi), and provides tourist with a rich local cuisine. The Inspection Bungalow and the Guest House are the only two commercial places for visitors to stay.
