Wildlife Sanctuaries in Karnataka: Part 1

Karnataka tourism is one that boasts of the state's efficiency in protecting its culture, heritage history and much more. Like all the other aspects of tourism, even wildlife tourism has flourished and attracted tourists from around the world. Karnataka has some of India's best wildlife sanctuaries and national parks that protect some of the endangered species of animals and birds.

If you love to take a walk into the woods and watch the life of the wild, there are many options for you in Karnataka. Let's take a look at some of the wildlife sanctuaries here where you could watch the animals so close!

Bandipur National Park/Tiger Reserve

The Bandipur National Park is one of the best preserved wildlife reserves in India. Located amidst the scenic surroundings of the Western Ghat, a stretch of about 874 km is home to some of the endangered species like sambar, barking deer and spotted deer, a variety of birds and reptiles too.

It is also one of the 9 tiger reserves in India initiated by the Central government to protect tigers in India. The national park is also a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve that includes Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary in Kerala, Nagarhole National Park and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.

Anshi National Park

The Anshi National Park is located in the Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka. The national park adjoins the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary which was earlier a part of the national park.

Covering an area of around 340 sq.km, the Anshi National Park is home to some of the wild species that include Malabar Civet, Indian bison, sloth bear and pangolin. The park is also survived by a variety of reptiles and over 200 species of birds.

Bannerghatta National Park

The Bannerghatta National Park (which includes the Bannerghatta Biological Park) is located around 22 km from the Bangalore city.

An expanse of 104 km in space, the park is mostly dense and is home to some of the wild species like the wild boar, panthers, bison, leopard and lion. A visit to the national park would be a rewarding experience as you take a safari inside the thick woods exploring the wild!

Spread over 600 sq.km, the national park comprises mostly evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.

Some of the animals that can be found here are lion-tailed macaque, golden jackal, Bengal tiger, Indian giant flying squirrel, Malabar whistling thrush among the rest. There are also guest houses where travellers could stay and get refreshed.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. The sanctuary is a natural habitat for wildlife.

Some of the animals found here include the black panthers, gaur, crocodiles and other reptiles, birds that include grey hornbill, the great pied hornbill, the Malabar pied hornbill, white breasted kingfisher and crested serpent eagle.

Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole National Park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. The park is located in Kodagu district and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Apart from the rich variety of wildlife, the vast expanse of 643 sq.km also has small streams, waterfalls, valleys and hills to attract a traveller. It is known for its tiger-predator ratio with a large number of tigers, elephants and Indian bison.

The sanctuary is a protected area spread across Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Ramanagaram districts of Karnataka.
