A Visit to the Naina Devi Temple

Nainital, also known as the 'Lake District of India', 'The Lake of Three Sages', 'Tri-Rishi-Sarovar', is located in the Himalayan belt amidst the Kumaon Hills and is blessed with beautiful lakes. Legend has it that the left eye of the Hindu Goddess Sati, wife of Lord Shiva, fell here and thus created the eye-shaped Naini Lake.

This place started to gain importance due to this belief and thousands of Hindu pilgrims come here to offer thier respect to the Goddess. A temple was constructed here dedicated to the Goddess Naina Devi.

In the year 1880 due to heavy landslides the temple was destroyed and a new one was built in its place. Other than Goddess Naina Devi, Goddess Sati is worshipped here as the Shakti devi and also there are shrines of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kali here. There is also a peepal tree that stands here at its entrance.

The region is considered highly religious due to the belief that a part of the body of Goddess Sati fell and is therefore considered a 'Shakti Peeth'. The whole area has a spiritual vibe and thus attracts pilgrims and tourists in large numbers here.

Naini Lake

Naini Lake is the prime attraction of Nainital, which is surrounded by green hills. Travellers can enjoy activities like yachting, rowing and paddling here. This lake is quite long, and its northern end is known as the Mallital, while the southern is called the Tallital. This is the only lake having a bridge with a post office on it. Besides, a bus station, taxi stand, railway reservation counter and shopping centres are located nearby.

Hanumangarhi

Hanumangarhi is a religious site located at a distance of 3 km from Nainital. The famous temple devoted to the Hindu Lord Hanuman is perched at an elevation of 1951 m above sea level. There is a Shitala Devi Temple and Ashram of Lila Sah Bapu located on the other side of the hill here.

Khurpatal

Khurpatal is an angler's paradise, located nearly 10 km away from Nainital. This beautiful hamlet is perched at an elevation of 1635 m above sea level and is known for its pleasant climate and an enchanting lake, where fishing can be enjoyed.

Tiffin Top

Tiffin Top is a scenic picnic spot which is located at a distance of 4 km from Nainital and is also known as the Dorothy's Seat. This spot is perched on the Ayarpatta Peak, at an elevation of 7520 ft above sea level. Travellers can enjoy majestic views of the mighty Himalayan ranges along with the rustic landscape from here. Tourists can reach this destination by hiking from the town.

Nainital Zoo

The Nainital Zoo is a tourist hotspot and is located at an elevation of 2100 m above sea level. The zoo is home to various animals, including the Himalayan black bears, monkeys, Siberian tigers, leopards, wolfs, palm civet cats, rose ringed parakeets, silver pheasants, hill foxs, ghorals, sambars, and barking deers. The zoo remains close on Mondays and all national holidays. It is just a kilometre away from the Nainital bus stop.

How to Reach

The Pantnagar Airport is the nearest air base to Nainital, which is located at a distance of 55 km. This airport is connected to the Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi by frequent flights. Besides, it is connected to all the major destinations of India. The Kathgodam Railway Station is the closest railhead to Nainital, which is located at a distance of 23 km. This railway station is well connected to Lucknow, Agra and Bareilly by direct trains. Visitors can hire a taxi from this station to reach Nainital.Tourists can avail private and public bus services to reach Nainital. Private Volvo
buses are available to Nainital from Delhi. Semi-deluxe and deluxe buses are also available from Almora, Ranikhet, and Badrinath to Nainital.
